Frequently asked questions.
Answers to the things people ask us most about ClayBuilder.
What is ClayBuilder?
ClayBuilder is a website builder for people and businesses who want a professional site without writing code. You design your pages in a visual editor, publish them to ClayBuilder hosting, and connect your own domain, all in one place.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Pages are built from ready-made sections and components, like hero banners, image galleries and contact forms, and every color, font and spacing choice is made in a visual editor that shows your changes live. The ability to add custom functionality through code is available, but you never need it.
Can I try ClayBuilder for free?
Yes. Building is free and no card is required to start. You only need a plan when you are ready to publish your site to the web, and you can cancel at any time.
Is hosting included, or do I need to buy it separately?
Hosting is included in all subscription plans.
Can I use a domain I already own?
Absolutely. Your domain stays with the registrar you bought it from, whether that is GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare or any other service. You add one DNS record that ClayBuilder generates for you, and once it is detected your site goes live on your domain. You can also search for and register a new domain without leaving ClayBuilder.
Do I receive an SSL certificate for my website?
Yes, automatically. As soon as your domain is connected, ClayBuilder issues the SSL certificate that puts https and the padlock in your site's address bar, and renews it for you from then on.
Will my website look good on mobile devices?
Yes. The editor has a mobile view with multiple device options you can easily switch between. Any changes you make there are saved for mobile only, so you can fine-tune spacing and layout for smaller screens without affecting the desktop design of your website. Any section can also be hidden on mobile or desktop, giving you full control over how your site appears on different devices.
Do websites built in ClayBuilder have good SEO and AIEO?
Yes. Every published site gets a sitemap and robots.txt automatically, and its pages are served as clean, fast HTML that search engines and AI search tools can read without running scripts. You can write your meta description with a live Google result preview, verify your site with Google Search Console, and connect Google Analytics.
Does ClayBuilder have an AI assistant?
Yes. Clayton, the assistant built into the editor, can see the site you are working on. It can answer questions about your pages and can add sections, restyle components, rewrite headings, and do various other things for you. Every edit Clayton suggests requires your approval.
How is ClayBuilder different from other website builders?
There are no plugins you need to install, update, or patch, as well as no separate hosting you need to manage. Instead of being given empty boxes that need design know-how in order to look right, you build from purpose-made components that provide you with real control over colors, fonts, spacing, and more. Domain management, SSL, hosting, and publishing all live in ClayBuilder itself, keeping everything convenientally organized in one place for you.
Can I undo a change after publishing my website?
Yes. Every publish saves a complete copy of your site as a version you can revert to. You can view any past version, share it with a link, or restore it into a new draft. Any edits you make after publishing stay in your draft until you choose to publish them.
What happens to my site if I cancel my subscription?
Without an active plan your site is simply unpublished and returns to a draft that you can keep editing. Once you reactivate a plan, your site goes live again. If a payment fails, your site stays live through a grace period so you have time to complete the payment. Your data will never be deleted as a result of subscription cancellation.
